Fighting Homelessness in NYC
Donation protected
Hi!
My name is Rashel. I'm 23 and I'm from Long Island, New York. I'm currently studying to get my Masters in Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. After commuting too and from classes for over 6 months, I've had a tremendous amount of exposure to the homeless population in New York City. Every time I jump on the subway, the bus, or start walking through Manhattan, I can't help but count how many homeless individuals I see. I take note of their desperation, as I'm reminded how badly I wish I could help them, and how little there is for me to do.
14.
That's the amount of homeless individuals I needed to see to reach me to my breaking point. That's the amount of homeless individuals I needed to see in my 45 minute commute from Penn Station to the Upper East SIde for me to realize that there is in fact something I can do.
While ending homelessness would be incredibly difficult to do on a micro level, there's still a lot that can be done to help improve the quality of life for those who are homeless. Wth the money I raise, I will create care kits to distribute to the homeless all over New York City. Care kits are a simple way to provide practical help to a homeless man or woman. For $10, you can provide one care kit to a homeless person, supplying them with a water bottle, a juice box, a protein bar, peanut butter crackers, apple sauce, trail mix, pretzels, fruit snacks, a tooth brush, tooth paste, band aids, hand sanitizer, deodorant, gloves, hand warmers, and socks. Each care kit will also include a resource guide with information on different shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries all over Manhattan. I will be teaming up with NYC Rescue Mission to distribute these care kits to reach as many individuals as possible.
My hope is this project won't be one that ends quickly. Rather, I aim to continue raising as much money as possible, to continue creating carekits for as long as I can. I hope to gather more individuals who share this same vision, who might be interested in passing out care kits as well. Any contribution, no matter how big or small, will make such a a difference in funding this long-time aspiration of mine, and will help the large homeless population in New York City. Please consider donating, or sharing this with anyone who might be interested! Thank you all so much!
