Please Read ...It is a VERY SAD DAY for the Deschutes County ROCKS Boxing Team. We woke at 6:30am at our Hotel to head to the 2nd day of the Tacoma Junior Golden Gloves weigh-ins and found that our vehicle window had been smashed out & ALL of the Competition gear, ( NEW Gloves, NEW Head Gear, etc.), along with the kid's Uniforms, New box of Gauze & Tape, Electronics, and even the registration & personal info. plus other belongings were all stolen out of the SUV. These were several heavy LARGE bags, that could not have been pulled out thru a small BACK REAR SIDE WINDOW. It was raining and dark outside plus with dark tinted windows it was nearly impossible to see in. La Qinta Suites in Tacoma is where we stayed, a good place we thought and parked right in front of the hotel. The hotel has a security guard, but no cameras and nobody saw anything? The police are investigating this since this is the third night in a row cars have been broken into and apparently last night a car belonging to a wrestling Coach was stolen as well. This is sad INDEED, as we had just purchased much needed all new USA Boxing approved competition head gear and gloves, & other protective gear for the kids this year, the Uniforms taken included our Black boxing trunks with 'ROCKS' embroidered across the back. Everyone knows we always carry extra gear incase other teams forgot something.
This is a sad day, The kids cannot compete today, and being a Sunday there is nothing open to have the window replaced so the drive back is going to be a challenge with pouring rain and snow on the pass, but that is the least of our worries. These 'THIEVES' (whom obviously need a good program in their lives like Boxing) can destroy our property, take our equipment, Rob the kids of this opportunity, and disrupt what should be a great experience for these youth, but they can NEVER - EVER take their Spirit or HOLD our coaches back from supporting their dreams. What they do not know is that OREGON is built on Great communities, good people, and amazing volunteers and businesses who back our youth! We have a great army of people behind us in the Boxing world.
We have set this page up, humbly asking for any support anyone is able to provide to replace this expensive safety equipment that these youth need in order to compete. This happened at a time where we have NO TIME to do another fund raiser in order to replace this equipment. With four events coming up in the next month, we must act fast to get these kids what they need in order to participate., they train so hard four nights a week and deserve this chance. Any amount makes a difference, the Competition Gloves run about $75.00 to $165.00 a pair, the head gear is also very expensive due to the leather craftsmanship & Safety these need in order to be approved by AIBA & USA Boxing safety standards. The Uniforms however were all custom with the Team name embroidered on the back. But we can make due with standard uniforms.
We appreciate all of the support, kind comments & understanding from the general public that our volunteer staff have heard.
This is a story that all sports programs need to be aware of, trying to do good things for the youth of this nation through non profit programs and volunteers is hard enough without having to deal with something like this. This is one of the reasons we do what we do, to build a better future for our youth and young adults, to give them a fighting chance.
I want to apologies to all of the families and friends who traveled so far to watch these youth compete. We promise you, you will get to see them compete, and they will not let you down. This experience just made them stronger and more aware of the world.
God Bless.
