“Karah’s Healing Journey”
My name is Karah, I am 10 years old. I live with my Mom, Dad and my little brother Vinny, the cutest kid in town. There is one more thing I live with… Leukemia. This is my story, this is my journey. I hope that when you read my story it will move you to love a little more… embrace one another a little more… reach out to others a little more… and thank God each day a little more.
One fall morning my mom dropped me off my school. I remember waking up with a tummy ache that felt like no other I ever had and really tired. I love school, so I pushed myself to get ready. That day Mom and I had a little angel on our shoulders. Mom dropped me off at school and she didn’t get further than 2 blocks from the school when she came back for me. She said something just wasn’t right. Moms know this stuff. This is when it all began. My pediatrician checked me and told my Mom to take me to Huntington Memorial immediately. Before the day was over I was transferred to City of Hope Hospital and I went through all kinds of tests. Some really hurt. After more test the doctors told me, my Mom and Dad that I had Leukemia. What is that??? All I could gather from the word “Leukemia” was the fundraiser we had at school last year where we collected coins and another fundraiser where the girls in school donated their locks of hair for kids with cancer. When I was in the hospital I met kids like me, some had lost their hair. It was so scary for me. The doctors told my Mom and Dad that it was incredible that I was diagnosed so early in the sickness. That little angel had been following me way longer than we had thought.
My life has changed so much, since I started chemo treatments there are days when I just don’t feel like me. I am a Girl Scout, a swimmer, and a horse lover! One day I want to own a horse and when I grow up I want to be a veterinarian. Every day and night I say my prayers that God will make the medicine work and fix my blood cells. I am so grateful to God that I have my family and friends.
I believe that God has chosen me for a special journey. You see every day I see a blessing from heaven. It could be a stranger on the street that shares his story about someone they loved with Leukemia or it's a family member or a friend who is nicer towards others. I know my sickness has brought people together and touched their souls.
My Mom, Dad, Vinny and I live each day to the fullest, one day at a time. My Mom (Joann) is my rock, she makes me get up and smile even when I think I can’t. My little brother Vinny annoys me, just when I think I don’t have the energy to be annoyed. My Dad (Craig) he is so special because we have special talks just him and I that help me be brave, courageous and he shows me so much love.
These are my blessings… and counting
Thank you for reading my story, please join me in my journey.
Love & Smooches,
Karah
