About Us
Kamayan Coalition is an alliance of LGBTQIA+ Filipino American, Filipinx, and Asian-Pacific Islander community orgs from across the United States. Our organizational reach currently spans five states and consists of the following organizations:
Asian and Pacific Islander Queers United for Action (AQUA-DC) -- Washington, DC
Barkada NYC -- New York, NY
Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA-SF) -- San Francisco, CA
Orlando Queer & Trans Asian Association (OQTAA) -- Orlando, FL
Sige! -- New York, NY
Southern Nevada Asian Pacific Islander Queer Society (SNAPIQS) -- Las Vegas, NV
Sacramento Filipinx LGBTQIA -- Sacramento, CA
As leaders from these organizations, we draw strength from our diverse professional backgrounds, varied life experiences, and accumulated experience advocating for queer Filipin@/x empowerment.
Unfortunately, we know firsthand that queer Filipin@ Americans and Filipinx folks in the United States are often decentered or ignored in less intentional LGBTQIA+ or Filipino spaces. To help alleviate this oversight, we came together as members and leaders from our various organizations to create a national platform to amplify the voices and experiences of our queer Filipin@ American and Filipinx family across the country, which is how this celebration came together in under two months.
We saw a deep-seated need in our community that wasn't being met, especially in these desperate moments of crisis--a global pandemic that's touched so many of our lives and devastated countless others; countless Filipin@ and Filipinx essential workers facing myriad crises and harrowing conditions on the frontlines as doctors, nurses, and other essential medical staff and as service workers that have kept essential services like our grocery stores and pharmacies running; our Black allies & Blackapino kababayans facing untold amounts of brutality and violence at the hands of an unjust carceral state, both while marching peacefully in the streets and isolating peacefully in their homes; and widespread incompetence on the parts of numerous government leaders--both here in the US and in the Philippines--who have done next to nothing to mitigate the impact of this catastrophe or provide relief for its ailing citizens.
We are painfully aware that our efforts may be little more than just a drop in the bucket against the grim backdrop of this historical moment; however, as community leaders, we also understand that we have a responsibility to the members of our queer Fil Am community to mitigate the impact of this crisis however we can with what little we have, even if it's just to educate and entertain a virtual crowd of (God-willing) a few hundred members of our queer kapamilya for two afternoons on a weekend in October.
With your help, we hope to do that while simultaneously offering our cadre of panelists, presenters, performers, and educators just and equitable compensation, especially now when their lives and livelihoods have been heavily impacted by the global crises that have affected us all. All proceeds from this campaign (along with all donations solicited via EventBrite) will go towards honoraria for their time and contributions and provide foundational support towards future events.

October presents us with a unique opportunity to uplift queer Filipin@ American and Filipinx stories as the month commemorates both Filipino American History Month and LGBTQIA+ History Month. Through performances, presentations, and critical discussions that explore various facets of the queer Fil Am experience, we aim to celebrate our shared histories and identities while building a greater sense of community with our queer kababayans across the United States and in the Philippines.
