We are three students at Skyline High School in Sammamish, Washington. You may be currently aware, but our school has been filled with traumatic and devastating events. First of all, two students have died from drug overdoses who were both respectively members of Skyline’s 2021 class. In addition, we have family and friends close to us that have attempted or committed suicide. Through one month of the 2019-2020 school year, our school’s environment has become one that is filled with stress, hopelessness, grief, and loss. Our organization—Filled In Hearts Club—was founded by three Skyline students with the purpose to make a difference because we could not afford to lose another member of our family or community without attempting to help. Our main objective is to raise awareness and start the conversation about these topics (drugs, suicide, and other mental illnesses) that are considered taboo because of the stigmas associated with them. Our organization’s title, “Filled in Hearts Club”, encourages students to draw black hearts on the palms of their hands which can be used as a conversation starter to address these issues that need to be discussed. Any donations are much appreciated and will either be put towards awareness activities or donated to a charity fighting for a similar cause. Together we can make King County and Washington a better place.
