I am Larry E McPherson , an internationally recognized still photographer turned filmmaker. My first film "The Loggerhead Shrike" began as an exploration of the species' behavior and vocalizations. Filmed in an agricultural area of Arkansas near Memphis it ended showing the unique behavior, some never filmed before, of how the species handles its food, finds a mate, and raises its young.
I spent 135 days filming over a 2-year period to acquire 150 hours of footage. In the following year, in consultation with leading shrike experts, I edited it into the 22-minute film. The shrike film was entirely self-funded and has been made available free to everyone. I spent over $98,000 on equipment alone.
During the filming repeatedly carrying 65 pounds of video equipment for long distances over rough terrain was hurting my hips. At age 74, my physical therapist has recommended I get lighter gear. Therefore, to continue working I need to re-invest in a new lighter-weight camera system.
This is why I make an appeal to you for financial support to defray the costs of "The Loggerhead Shrike" production, and as I plan and prepare for my next project, continuing to film nature in the spirit and with the quality of "The Loggerhead Shrike" film.
I have been researching a camera system using the new Panasonic VariCam LT 4K Camera. System weight (camera, lens, tripod and accessories) would be about 36 lbs., 29 lbs. lighter than my previous system and I could carry it without hurting myself. With this new equipment and its different capabilities, I expect to be able to approach the subject in different ways. The new camera system would cost $60,050.
Please give your support toward my goal! Your generous contribution will ultimately educate others as I dive into the mysteries of the bird's lives. When the details of the animal's lives are revealed many people will learn to love and value them, and will want to protect them and their habitat.
