Final Days of Dignity for Jeff

On December 20, 2017, I got the kind of call that makes your blood run cold. “Your brother is in the ICU, we will try to pull him through the night, but get here as fast you can,” the doctor told me.
During those first few, agonizing days in the ICU, we learned that Jeff was in septic shock after pneumonia spread to his bloodstream.
Jeff regained consciousness after about six days and shortly thereafter began breathing on his own. After 9 days in the ICU, he was moved to a regular floor and we were hopeful that he was on the road to recovery.
Every week since December has been a rollercoaster of progress and setbacks. But after more than four months of fighting hard for his life, Jeff’s doctors advised him there is nothing more they can do. My brother is now on palliative care to make him comfortable as nature takes its course.
Septic shock is not only devastating, it is the most expensive condition to treat. Jeff’s insurance coverage has maxed out, his financial resources are wiped out and he is in need of 24/7 care.
We are hoping to bring Jeff home for his final weeks or months if we can raise money for his care, including a home health aid. The conditions in the long-term care facilities in Chicago for people with no financial resources are nothing short of horrifying.
Jeff is one of the most generous and compassionate individuals you could ever meet. He has always been the first to offer a helping hand to the elderly and the sick, and has rescued many animals. Jeff frequently cooked meals for sick neighbors and has helped many through their battles with cancer and other illnesses.
Now Jeff is the one who needs help.
