Fire at 40 Clarkson Ave, Brooklyn
Donation protected
Early in the morning on Wed., September 30th, an electrical fire started in the wall between two apartments on the top floor of 40 Clarkson Avenue in Flatbush/Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn, NY (brief news report here ).
Fortunately everyone made it out with no serious injuries, but one family in particular suffered significant losses. Not only did their beloved cat die from the smoke, but they lost most of their possessions. This family, who have have lived in the building for 44 years, are the kindest people you can imagine.
A number of other apartments sustained significant damage from smoke and/or water as well and are not currently habitable. Some families are covered for losses by insurance and some are not.
We would like to support our neighbors who didn't have insurance by making a dent in their out-of-pocket costs. Please join us!
Edited to add specifics on the transfer of funds. The beneficiaries of these donations are 3 families (let's call them A, B and C) who have lived in my apartment building for decades. A small committee of neighbors agreed to the following division of funds. Family A who lost everything will receive the majority, over 80% of what we've raised. Families B and C also suffered losses and are uninsured. Because their losses were not as extreme, they will each receive a smaller amount, almost 9% each. 100% of funds (minus the service fees that GoFundMe keeps) will be transferred from GoFundMe to my personal bank account and then to each of the families using their preferred method, which is personal check for A and B and Venmo for C.
Thank you for your support!
