Fire at Men's Recovery Home

Tax deductible

The Federal Revenue Agency and the state of Pennsylvania both recognize First Step Recovery Houses, Inc. as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Since the organization's founding in 1992, our company has assisted about 1050 homeless adult males in need of long-term, subsidized, supportive housing. Many people who are in recovery from substance misuse also deal with chronic illnesses and mental health barriers. But, we have discovered that relapse doesn't always happen with case management, supportive services, family support, health and wellness, medical, and mental health therapy.

Group talks and tailored care from our case management team are advantageous to our participants. They also gain from our family reunification and support program, which helps people properly and actively work to reconstruct families.

But on March 29, 2023, disaster struck in the late evening. It was found that our building's entire backside was on fire. All of our participants made it out safely thanks to their quick thinking. The majority of the structure, along with several personal belongings, was destroyed. There are no adequate words to describe the horrific incident that occurred that evening. Nothing like this has ever happened in 31 years. We are quite appreciative that the men who were moved can spend a little time at the facility next door, which was spared by the fire. Due to First Step's full occupancy of one house, we regretfully cannot take on any more participants until the damaged building has undergone rehabilitation.

Your help is crucial to helping our organization get back on its feet. Insurance is never adequate to cover every expense. Any money earned will be used for the participant's personal belongings' recovery and reconstruction.
