Fire Evacuation Safe Home for Joaquin

About Joaquin
Joaquin Carson has an amazing life now that he and his family advocated for and won his release from an institution 9 years ago. His home is completely customized to meet his unique medical and behavioral needs. Joaquin, who experiences autism and epilepsy, has been living a fabulous life in a “Joaquinified” home environment.

His home is highly durable and sanitizable, and is a rural environment with few social pressures and lots of caring neighbors, just down the hill from his sister’s home.

However, recent and current wildfires (#Valleyfire) have threatened his safety and security. The loss of his customized home is certainly a scary thought. But even more worrisome is the fact that whenever he has to evacuate, he and his team have not been able to find a safe place for him to go. He needs a place with shatterproof windows, minimal and sturdy furnishings, no carpeting, and a shower. After much thought and ideas from friends, his team has discovered an option that will work for him…a “toy hauler!”

With the help of his family and team, in an emergency evacuation, he would be able to park this bare-bones camper/trailer at a campground or on a friend’s property, hook up to water, and have his essential needs met anywhere he needs to go for safety, without jeopardizing the safety of others.

A used toy hauler runs around $10,000. That’s not including the truck that would be needed to haul it, registration, and insurance. We are hoping to raise enough money ASAP as fire season is among us and Joaquin and his family are impacted by the Valley Fire.

If you would like to contribute, friends have created this GoFundMe campaign. Please share. If you prefer, you can also contribute directly via Venmo at @Diana-Carson.

His sister, Diana Pastora Carson is an incredible advocate and has shared their story to thousands of people over the years. She has written an article recently highlighting a fire scare in July, where Joaquin had no place to go:

Even those with disabilities should have a safe place to go A family’s crisis during a wildfire
