Hello, my name is Fernando I am a 36 year old resident of Old Colorado City. Close to downtown Colorado Springs. Last night my life was turned upside down and we lost everything including our pet and her kittens. I cried throughout the day in and out of shock of this, lightning strike, unforgiving fire, and the devastation it has caused. I take care of my elderly mother and also help my little brother out by allowing him to come to Colorado to help him get his life together. Thanks to my friend that was over for her birthday screaming my name from downstairs. As I rushed down I noticed smoke filling up the kitchen and a heat that was hard to describe. The door flew open and there was a wall of flames and no way out. My friend was screaming and all I could think of was finding a way out. I thought the window in the living room would be best but it was stuck with the Ac in it and wouldn't move. The room began to get pitch black and I felt discomfort in my chest and heard my mom caught. My little brother was asleep I woke him up and somehow knocked the window out. He was disoriented and didn't know what was going on but there was no time to think and I threw him out of the window. I turned and looked around in the shadows eyes burning the taste of cinder on my tongue and know visibility of my mom I dropped to the floor and thankful I felt my mothers hand. I yelled at my friend to go up stairs because I could no longer see the window. A memory came to mind not sure from when but the thought go up came across my mind. As my friend attempted to go up stairs another friend of mine that was upstairs pulled her up and they went out of my upstairs window. As my friends went up stairs it got dark again quick and I heard the door slam shut. My chest is starting to hurt and my mom is not able to stand. I reached around in the darkness and was painfully relieved when my palm met the hot door knob. After throwing it opened I dragged and carried my mom up stairs which was pitch black. I saw flames outside of the window (the tree was on fire) and ran too it as fast as I could trying to hold my breathe and motivate my mom to make it to the window that was so close but felt so far to get to I tried to get my mom out of the window but she was scared and exhausted. I went out the window without a second thought I pulled my mother out. Then made her lie on her stomach and shimmy over towards the front of the house. The tree in the front of the house was not on fire but blocked us from the view of the firemen and EMT's. We all screamed out so they would see us the made it up and got us down. I waited for everyone to get down and then called out for my little brother and was told he was in the ambulance. My mom was rushed to the ambulance and everyone was accounted for except my cats. This has to be the scariest thing I have gone through in my life and wouldn't wish that on anyone. Unfortunately I have been focusing on my mom's health and helping my brother financially my renters insurance had not yet been renewed and I have failed my family. I don't expect much from this but a friend said it was a good idea and I shouldn't try to take this on alone (like everything else in my life) and do something I don't really know how to do and ask for help. I write this as I am restlessly trying to figure out what to do next. I brought my mom and brother lunch and a change of clothes thanks to the red cross showing up and providing some assistance. I also paid for a room for a couple nights and got a change of clothes myself because all I had on was underwear which was burned with holes from ambers from the fire ambers landing on my bottom. These funds are gone. I don't know what we are going to do or how I'm going to setup a station so I can work. I know I don't know everyone who reads this and might be completely different from you. But I send positive energy and love for taking the time to read this. Any amount would be greatly appreciated and if you cant help just tell someone close to you that you love them and make sure your fire alarms are working (ours didn't go off)! I wish you all of your dreams come true and your heart and life is filled with love. Thank you for reading, considering, and taking the time out of your day to read and hopefully share this story. Have a beautiful life and a great day!!
