What We are Living With
Ahmaud Arbery, a black man, was jogging in his neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia on February 23 when he was killed in a shooting after being chased by Gregory and Travis McMichael, a father and son. A video of the chase and shooting was shared on social media and caused outrage.
Gregory and Travis McMichael were ultimately arrested in May in connection with Arbery's death. They were charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.
On March 13, 2020, Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African American woman, was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove who entered her apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, while serving a "no-knock warrant".
According to the wrongful death lawsuit filed against the police, "the officers then entered Breonna's home without knocking and without announcing themselves as police officers. The officers then proceeded to spray gunfire into the residence with a total disregard for the value of human life." Taylor was shot eight times.
The death of George Floyd, an African-American man, occurred in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, when Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds; 2 minutes and 53 seconds of which occurred after Floyd became unresponsive, according to the criminal complaint filed against Chauvin. Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on the road, while Chauvin had his knee on his neck. The three other arresting officers were identified as Thomas K. Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng. Officer Kueng held Floyd’s back while Lane held his legs, and Thao stood nearby and looked on.
What We are Fighting For
The First Aid Support Team was created by Mari Chiles and Miles Ezeilo, 2 college students from Atlanta, GA. As protests have erupted in our own city, it is clear that the entities of law enforcement and criminal justice were never situated to protect and provide justice for black people -- they were meant to stifle and oppress us from the beginning. Positive changes for the black community are not going to be made until our voices are heard and the perpetrators of this violence are properly dealt with. Peaceful protests have occurred for far too long without action. We are calling for an end to police brutality, the reform of law enforcement, the end of this racist establishment which endangers black life every day.
How You Can Help
As we move into this long-overdue revolution, the people on the side of justice are putting their bodies on the line for the cause. Protests are beginning to occur all over the country, and they are becoming violent as police continue to antagonize and brutalize demonstrators. We are raising money to donate first-aid supplies to protestors on the ground so that they can be cared for during this time. In order for this movement to be successful, we must help in any and every way.
We have identified an organization in Minnesota which we will be donating supplies to. Northstar Health Collective provides medical care and support to activists during protests and demonstrations. For more information about their initiative, we have linked them here:
https://www.northstarhealthcollective.org
After the acquisition of $5,000, one hundred percent of the funds will be used to purchase approximately 600 completed supply kits.
The money raised from this GoFundMe campaign will be used to purchase:
First aid kits
Gloves
Gauze
Sandwich bags
Bandages
These supplies will then be packaged by the fundraising team and shipped to Northstar Health Collective in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The war against institutional oppression cannot be won without solidarity. We ask that you make a contribution in any way you can. Thank You.
