First double hand transplant in Canada
Donation protected
In April of 2015, I contracted Sepsis and Bacterial Meningitis. Spent 5 weeks in a medically induced coma and suffered near total organ failure, and was on life support and was only given a 5% chance of survival. In order for me to live, the Drs had to amputate both of my legs below the knee and both hands, now 5 years later I am walking with the aid of prosthetic legs. 2 years ago I researched the possibility of hand transplant surgery, this has never been attempted before in BC. Through Drs at St Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, I was put in touch with a team in Ontario who are willing to help, my wife and I will be moving to Ontario in April for me to become the first person in Canada to receive a double hand transplant. We will be moving back to B.C. in 2-3 years after surgery and rehabilitation ,to be with our families again and watch my grandchildren grow up, this is where I need your help, BC does not have a government supported program for hand transplants and has denied funding for any ongoing medical expenses or immunosuppressive medication costs. If you can please help me by donating to my cause and my dream of having hands again I would be forever grateful.
Sincerely,
Rick Thompson
