First Nation Wellness

Hi everyone, we are a group of third-year Social Service students at Dawson College. As our program comes to an end, we were assigned a project to make community change in relation to social problems. Our group has decided to tackle food insecurity amongst the First Nation population by creating a project called FN Wellness. FN wellness stands for Food Nutrition, as well as a double entendre for First Nation. FN Wellness is a project that envisions creating awareness about the food insecurity reality experienced by Indigenous communities, in particular those living in the Montreal area, Waskaganish and Kuujjuaq. The lack of access to nutritional foods in Indigenous communities has different factors that affect the conditions in each community. Moreover, the high prices for the majority of products have a negative impact in most remote locations, this is the reality in many areas even when the Federal Government allocated the funds to subsidize the cost of transportation. Furthermore, access to local food sources has been affected by pollution, climate change/global warming; this state of things has prevented access to traditional ways of eating and this has a high correlation with malnourishment. Did you know that households in Northern communities spend more than half their income on groceries? Or 75% of people under 18years old are malnourished in Northern communities? Change starts from the people. Any donations will help for FN Wellness, we appreciate any support that is given. Donations will contribute to providing support to the community as well as working towards social change.
