Chicago police found Bennet (now Luca) on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head on Chicago’s west side. He was taken to Chicago Animal Care and Control and rushed to a hospital for specialty surgery by a volunteer with MCP rescue. Bennett's first surgery was to repair the gunshot wound and remove several crushed teeth and floating broken jaw pieces. A CT scan found that his jaw was too shattered to repair. Bennett had to wear a brace 24 hours a day for almost 8 weeks to hold the jaw in place to heal properly. He was fed by a syringe and soft food was made into small meatball size bites. He received round the clock care by his foster family. It was heartbreaking that he couldn’t chew on a toy or play like a normal pup, and the only time I could remove his muzzle was to clean his wounds and mouth. Through all of his struggles he is only filled with love. This sweet boy loves everyone!
