Home repair due to Hurricane damage.

WHO WE ARE:
I’m Walter. I work in social services. My wife Dori is a home health nurse. Together, we’ve been caring for our sick and aging parents for the past year.
THE SITUATION:
Like many people, our finances were stretched past the breaking point while we cared for our parents. Supporting two households financially wiped out our savings and put us in debt. While we were able to help our parents apply for some resources, when we went to try and get help ourselves, we weren’t found eligible.
I didn’t see a way to bring us back to stability unless I made a big change. So I took a risk: I applied to get my Masters. The advanced degree would open up more job opportunities, and I thought we could get back on track.
We were already desperate, but we had a plan to work our way out of it. All we needed was to hang on.
Then Hurricane Idalia and Helene hit.
While our home is thankly still livable, it’s not much more than that. Idalia did major damage to our roof, and now our floors aren’t safe to walk on. Like many people in Georgia, we live in a modular home, and while it's a house to us, to insurance, it’s just a trailer. The amount our insurance paid out was enough to cover enough of our bills to keep our car from getting repossessed and to keep the lights on. Now that money is gone. So is my college financial aid money.
I’ve been buying food and water on credit cards, and the debt is starting to crush us.
I’m trying to get a second job, but between the roof, the floor, and my family’s needs, I’ve reached my own breaking point.
WHAT WE NEED: WHY $35,000?
Roof costs: $15,000
Floor costs: $17,000
Remaining $3,000: bills, food, car
My wife and I are givers by nature. We wouldn’t be asking right now if we had any other options. We’ve taken hits to our savings, our credit, our home, and our pride.
Sometimes, even the helpers need help. Please help us get back on solid ground - literally.
