"Flood" brings insult to injury
Donation protected
A day we have been bracing for that came all too soon..... A month ago we lost our mother ( My father that this fund is for lost his wife of 46 years) We knew as she was a collector of things to put it nicely.... we would have to all pitch in and help my dad sort through , organize ,to sell /donate etc all the things but never did we expect insult to be added to injury when at 50 ft above sea level we got 2ft or more of water inside of the house they shared and I spent my teen years in. Almost 30 years and nothing like this was ever a thought or worry.
We brought my mother to Virginia where she was on hospice at my house until her passing. We sat Shiva for a week and my father stayed a few additional days returning home the Thursday before Milton..... Tuesday he evacuated , He was only home for 4 days before returning to VA and the only reason he left was because I work for an airline and he could so why sit without power when he could be with us. Water intruding into his home and memories was never even a thought.
The county placed a mandatory evacuation on their section of the neighborhood due to the transformers being under water and the water that came to the windows of my mother's Accord sat for a week before units came to pump the water out and make the home accessible to even start trying to do damage control. By the time we got in the damage was done black mold lined the walls like a marker saying the water came to here. The walls all need to come out on the first floor and the furniture, family memories, antiques and heirlooms are unsalvageable.
Devastated doesn't even begin to describe how we feel but also outraged as there was a lot of city planning flaws that made 15" of rainfall turn our parking lot into a waist high swimming pool. The slow response times before action was taken to bring the water levels down is insane. The fact that insurance can brush it off as flood even though it isn't in the traditional sense storm flooding is insane. The fact that 24 families are left scrambling because the city doesn't take care of its road issues INSANE!
Now if you've made it this far here is why I made a gofund me despite my dad saying he shouldn't have to pay for this but neither should anyone reading this ....
So here is the ask, support our fight, donate $1 like it's a signature on a petition share words of encouragement for my father to read and keep going. Have a similar situation share it here (because I know it's happening to more than just our little section) there is a strength in numbers and my hopes is we get heard
And if you by chance knew my mother or met her in passing SHARE A MEMORY OF HER because Memories are worth more than money and a lot of those that we lost, we can not replace.
Once again the goal isn't a dollar amount it's a people amount , there is strength in numbers and something needs to be done so this doesn't keep happening.
* the legal , funds will be used to rebuild as well as fight for his community so they don't get left high and dry again (ha the irony)
