Flood Relief For Shelter Cats

Tax deductible
As many of you know, Central Vermont was recently demolished by flood waters. Unprecedented amounts of rain poured down, flooding homes, rivers businesses, and Kitty Korner Cafe and shelter was not spared from the disaster.

By 5pm on Monday, flood waters has risen to the sidewalk. By 8pm, the water had begun to flood into the building and we rushed to make sure cats were safe and dry. With how fast the water came and how violent the torrents were, we leapt into action - moving cats to safe spaces, getting as much as we could off the ground, and doing whatever we could to save the building and its feline residents from certain doom and disaster.

By midnight it was determined that we would need to take drastic measures. Holes were broken through the floor to drain water into the basement, barricades were made from furniture and supplies, and we stayed there through the night watching as the water rose inch by inch closer to the main floor.

Thankfully, the rain stopped just shy of a total loss, but every supply and item stored in our basement, our brand new washer and dryer, as well as a lot of the items upstairs were completely destroyed by the water and debris brought in by the rain.
We are also now finding that the walls, floors, and other parts of the structure will need to be completely replaced due to water damage before we can even hope to reopen.
We are happy to report that our kitties are safe and sound, but we are now on damage control to make sure we can continue to care for them as we try to find their forever homes. Everything from elderly cats with medical needs to kittens not even old enough for vaccines are in our care and we need all the help we can get to land on our feet (much like a cat!) and come back stronger than ever!

How will these funds be spent?

  • Replacing supplies for our cats comes first! Food, Litter, Cat Beds, Blankets, etc. all need to be replaced and we have a lot to get! We will start by obtaining all the cat items we lost in the water and to supply our fosters with!
  • Cleanup and Sanitation. The building was overrun by ground water and every inch of it needs to be cleaned. Some funds will be allocated to make sure this is done professionally and to the state standards to reopen.
  • Rebuilding. We have had to tear apart the floors, walls, and beyond and all of it will need to be rebuilt. New sheetrock, new flooring....it will all need to be redone and the cost rises by the day. In order to reopen, it needs to be fixed and we will need all the help we can get to make it happen!
