Flood Relief Salinas de Nagualapa
Donation protected
I'm starting this account together with husband Ines Antonio Torres, on behalf of his family and community of Las Salinas, Nicaragua. He and I first met there 7 years ago and currently split our time between Nicaragua and the U.S. We currently live in Monterey, CA. If you have ever had the pleasure of traveling to Pacific coast of Nicaragua you know what a beautiful place it is and how amazing the people are.
On October 5th the coastal area of Rivas, Nicaragua including the communities of Limon I, Limon II, Las Salinas, Popoyo, Guasacate, Virgen Morena, El Igueral and more were devasted when heavy rains from Tropical Storm Nate caused multiple rivers to overflow. Homes were flooded, roads washed out, and hundreds of families lost practically everything. Currently, people are without clean water, electricity, food, clothes...the list goes on.
Ines Antonio is going to his home town Las Salinas de Nagualapa next week to help with what he can. He will be collaborating with his family, friends, and community leaders to bring necessities to those who are in need. We are asking for cash donations to help. There is no limit on the cost and time that it will take to stabilize and rebuild, but our main focus now is helping those who need have clean water, food and dry clothes.
I can assure that any donation given will go directly to the community and will be facilitated by community members themselves. There is honestly no one I have better faith in than the Torres clan to take on this task. The first priority will obviously be basic supplies. We have two family wells that went undamaged and a 4WD vehicle that he can use to bring potable water...to start.
Ines will be able to access funds and withdraw money personally. Funds will be used to buy food, clothes, disel, whatever is needed. Supplies will be distributed by Ines and family personally. He has an amazing support system of family and friends, including the Salinas de Nagualapa Indeginous Community Leadership (La Junta Directiva), who are already doing what they can. For frame of referece: Ines' sister Marcia lost almost everything in her house. She is currently cooking food and taking it to people who lost more. He will be collaborating with people like her to address the communities' most pressing needs as they arise.
Ines (with help from his sisters Rosi and Marcia) will personally oversee all expenses and keep a budget. He will be updating with pictures and expense reports so you all can know where your efforts are going. Should we have any surplus after initial relief support we will makes funds accessible to those trying to rebuild with oversight by community leaders.
For those of you who live close by Monterey and also have linens and clothes you wish to donate, please let me know.
