Flood victims from Canoas, Brazil
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Priscila Underwood and I live in Albany / GA.
I'm from a Brazilian town called Canoas in southernmost Brazil. In the beginning of May a massive flood started to take place in many cities all over the state. The capital of the state is Porto Alegre and all the rivers around it and its metropolitan area are completely flooded.
My family is blessed enough to be safe and strong enough to be fully 'boots on the ground' helping with their time, talent and treasure.
The worst flood in the history of our state so far was in 1941 but the one happening in May/2024 is even bigger and more destructive.
Thousands of people lost it everything. Their homes, their personal belongings, documents, memories. Most of them left with only the clothes that they were wearing at the time and a backpack. Many left in the middle of the night.
Eventually those people will go back and have to rebuild and thrive from all this catastrophe.
That's why I'm asking for your support to help them with the aftermath of what happened.
The PLAN is that everything that will be gathered here will be transferred to my sister who lives in Brasil or taken personally by me in cash (note that GFM charges a 2.9% fee + .30c per donation) and will be used mainly towards cleaning products, building materials such as doors, windows, roofing material, wood, mattresses, furniture, clothes, food.
Now in south of Brasil is Autumn so pretty soon it will be winter time and there we have temperatures sometimes under 32F and no central heating in the houses.
The average monthly income in Brasil is around R$1412 which it equivalent to less than Us$80.
The reason that I am doing this personally and not through an organization it is because I will know for a fact that these resources will be applied to relief those communities. This money won't fall through the cracks of the bureaucracy of the state.
In Brasil we do not have the same type of government and non-profit support like we have in USA to assist with disasters. They also do not have property or flood insurance like we do.
Brasil, in general, does not commonly suffer from natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, etc., and is ill-equipped to address this flood.
Whatever we are able to get to bring some dignity back to those people.
I urge for your help to rebuild the place I used to call home.
If you wanna get more information you can Google about flood, Canoas, Porto Alegre, Guaiba River, Lagoa dos Patos, Vale do Taquari, Vale do Rio dos Sinos, Encantado city. These are just some of the keywords that can show you a little percentage of what those people are going through.
May God save our souls.
