Flooding in Nukuoro, Kapingamarangi and Sapwuahfik

Hello everyone! The Nukuoro Documentation Initiative (NDI) is raising money to help the residents of Nukuoro, Kapingamarangi, and Sapwuahfik. These islands are located in the southern part of the Federated States of Micronesia, and were recently hit by strong wind and waves. They have undergone severe saltwater flooding, and as a result are suffering from food and fresh water shortages. As low-lying atolls, these islands are particularly vulnerable to climate change, and are feeling the effects acutely. The damage is exacerbated by the islands' remoteness: it takes days for supply boats to reach them. Long-distance communication to these atolls is also difficult; Nukuoro has no wifi or access to the internet, making the extent of the damage and the needs of its residents extremely hard to determine. Recovery and repair to the islands' crops and infrastructure will likely take up to a year.

Funds raised will be used to purchase food and water for the affected island residents, including emergency restocking supplies like canned food, bottled water, and baby formula. The money will also be used to support the replanting of important sustenence crops, like banana, breadfruit, papaya, and especially taro, which have been destroyed by the salt water. Finally, we hope to use the money to charter small supply boats to the outer islands whenever possible, as they will be reliant on outside assistance until the groundwater can be desalinated.
