Flooding in the South of Brazil

Hi,

Some of you may know me, but I'm Gabrielle and I'm Brazilian, more specifically from the most southern state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul.

My home-state is currently experiencing massive devastation due to excessive rains and flooding (some areas reported over 500mm of rainfall within a couple of days). And this is not a localized problem. To give an idea of size, the state has approximately the same size as Italy (yes, the whole country!), with 345 out of 470 cities affected. Some hydroelectric power stations in the region measured water flows close to or exceeding the expected for a 10,000 year returning period (0.01% probability).

The situation at the moment there is still focused on search and rescue efforts and ensuring people have their basic needs met. It's all hands on deck and I'm asking for your help.

Once the floods subside, the reconstruction efforts will be extensive, as a lot of people lost their houses and a lot of basic infrastructure was severely damaged.

Anything goes a long way, as our currency is approximately 1 GBP = 6.34 BRL. If you are able to donate the equivalent of a Pint, that is approximately 42 BRL! In Brazil, that can buy 25l of mineral water. If 35 people donate 'a pint', that equals to someone's monthly minimum wage. A little really goes a long way!

I will distribute the raised funds between local charities and people operating relief and reconstruction efforts. Once finished, I'll post here the receipts showing how the funds have been distributed.

Note: If you want to donate directly, the local government has also provided an account where you can transfer funds directly (read more ). These funds will be managed by a mixed board of people, including members of charities, 'civil society' and others (see more). After these funds are distributed, these can be audited in the government's website.
