Story:

Hi, my name is Dr. Krista Williams, the CEO of the Floretta P. Carson Visual and Performing Arts Academy. As a performing artist and recent doctoral graduate of Boston University School of Music and alumna of the University of South Alabama Music Department, I have received awards and accomplished many goals through the arts. Through my passion and dedication, I have longed to create a school where underrepresented groups of students could have the opportunity to achieve their goals of becoming talented musicians or artists while fulfilling their educational dreams. I want to ensure that students within Mobile's most impoverished areas are provided with the opportunity to develop and fulfill their artistic skills and educational goals.

Historically, students with a low socioeconomic status are less likely to have access to pre-collegiate or pre-professional level arts and academic programming (National Endowment for the Arts, 2012). The purpose of the Floretta P. Carson Visual and Performing Arts Academy (FPC VPAA) is to change the dynamic of education by ensuring that all students, regardless of background, ethnicity, language, or ability, are provided with rigorous arts and academic courses that will prepare them to thrive within our global society. We will do this by removing barriers that prevent access to all populations and by nurturing, inspiring, and motivating a diverse body of talented students to develop and fulfill their artistic skills and educational goals. So many of our underrepresented students in Mobile, AL, are not supplied with rigorous academic and arts intensive programs, which are necessary for their continuous success at the collegiate level and in the workforce. Through this school, underrepresented groups of students in Mobile, AL, will finally have the chance to excel in life. This school will provide ALL students with collegiate preparatory academic and arts programs. With your support, we can bring this mission to life and change students' lives in ways unimaginable.
