Peter Florin's Cancer Expenses
Donation protected
At only 11-months old, Peter was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer after a large tumor was discovered in his leg. Our dear friends, Ryan and Lauren Florin, learned that the cancer - embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma - had unfortunately also spread to his lungs.
Peter underwent chemo nearly every week this year, often being admitted for a few days at a time at CHKD, the children's hospital in Norfolk. His type of cancer is rare - only 4 cases per 1 million children (in the 0-4 age group).
Sweet Peter is the youngest of 5 kids. He has 4 older siblings, ages 9, 7, 5, and 3. Lauren homeschools them all in addition to teaching online college courses in Education. Ryan works full-time in addition to teaching courses on-campus at the same University.
We are hoping to be there for the Florins, as they have always been there for each one of us, and help ease the burden of Peter’s medical expenses. Their heath insurance’s out of pocket deductible for the year is $8,000.
In addition to treatment at CHKD, Lauren and Ryan pursued integrative treatment with a Pediatric Cancer Specialist which insurance does not cover. Monthly supplements and whole food organic nutrition cost nearly $1,000 per month. Peter also went through genetic testing for the P53 gene - a gene relating to cancerous tumors.
On Sept. 19, the pediatric sarcoma surgeon in Washington, D.C. amputated his leg at the hip joint due to the size of the tumor. Though it was an adjustment to care for Peter after surgery, their resilient, sweet boy learned to crawl within 48 hours of having his leg amputated. However, after a few more weeks and a new chemo regiment, the tumors in his lungs were no longer responding to chemo and there was a new tumor in his abdomen.
On Saturday morning, Oct. 27, Peter went to heaven. He is now completely healed and no longer in pain. Thank you to everyone for all of your love, prayers, and support. The Florins will forever to be grateful. Please keep them in your prayers.
