Flowers for Betty

This is Betty, my darling mom. She’s a lot like your mom, I hope, and maybe like you, if you are a mom.
My mom could cook. She made delicious meals for five children every day. My mom could draw: she could draw Mickey Mouse from freehand. She could make Halloween masks without needing a template. She would do anything for her kids, just like your mom would. She could never bear to see her kids in pain.
She is beautiful, inside and out. My dad fell in love with her because she looks like Audrey Hepburn. She still does. He met her while she was working for the Philippine embassy, getting reparations from the Japanese government from World War II.
Today she is in critical care. She has been suffering from a rare brain disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy for five years. She used to dance all night long with my dad. Now she can no longer walk. She used to sit and listen to her kids and give them advice. Now she can no longer talk. She used to love eating sweets. She can’t, now, she is on a feeding tube, and just got a tracheostomy so she can swallow and breathe.
My dad has spent all his money to give her the care she needs. All five of her children have been in Vegas with her since she has been in critical care, calling insurance agencies, getting rejected for help. We are running out of money and time. We can’t bear to see our mom this way.
My third sister, Savina, is getting married at the end of October. We’d love to have mom attend the wedding, but she will need a portable ventilation machine to leave the hospital. She is in a respiratory care unit at the hospital, so my sister Savina has made paper flowers for her, since we can't have actual flowers there. If you can donate $25 or more and are interested in getting flowers, my sister will make a bouquet of three flowers and mail them to you (please send a private note with your address.) Thank you very much for anything you can give!
With love and blessings to all,
her kids, Sylvia, Sheela, Savina, Saya, Vik
PS. if you prefer PayPal please send to srupani AT gmail.com subject: Betty and remember to provide your address if you would like Savina's pretty paper flowers!
