FOLM - Develop and Upgrade Paths
Donation protected
The boardwalk at Langlands Moss cost £100,000 to install in 2013. All the money to buy and install the boardwalk was raised by the Friends of Langlands Moss (FOLM - a voluntary group) through sponsors and grants. The boardwalk allowed people of all abilities to enjoy this Local Nature Reserve (LNR), connect with nature, and get away from the demands of every day life. The LNR is home to many rare species and the bog itself dates back some 10,000 years and is one of the few remains lowland raised bogs left in Scotland.
On the evening of Tuesday 31st May 2016, and then again on Tuesday 4th May 2017, the boardwalk and remaining boardwalk was damaged by "willful intent" - someone set fire to it! This has caused approximately £80,000 worth of damage and means that the Moss can no longer be walked over and enjoyed safely. The boardwalk was made from recycled plastic which was highly fire retardant!
Due to both the fires happening within a year of each other and the cost to replace the boardwalk with suitable material, the decision has been made not to replace the boardwalk. The FOLM will raise money to develop new paths and upgrade existing paths through the trees. We also hope to install viewing platforms to allow everyone to still enjoy the open moss/peat bog area. If you are able to donate any amount to contribute to this, then that would be fantastic. The FOLM have and continue to be humbled by the messages of shock at these mindless acts, and take support from these.
