Research supports that food insecurity contributes to increased psychological distress. In this time during COVID-19 there is already a great deal of psychological and emotional distress and we are hoping to help alleviate some of the stress around food insecurity for our students.
For the past two years I have been teaching high school science at a program called the Newcomer Program. At the Newcomer Program we have the privilege of teaching newly arrived immigrants and refugees with limited to interrupted formal education. Given their unique situation, readily available aid is not as easily accessible to them as it is to a native born citizen in the United States. With that being said, we are hoping to raise $13,000 which would provide every student with a $100 gift card to a local grocery store. Food insecurity is an issue already faced by many of our students and is now greatly heightened given the current economic times.
Please help us raise these funds by May 20 and remind our students that they have a strong support system behind them.
