The Pülasü Co family is organizing this fundraiser to raise funds for food and water deliveries as well as reconstructing and repairing the only library available for miles in the rural Wayúu community of Guaimpletü in La Guajira, Colombia with the help of a local Wayúu-led organization WAYUUANDOCO. WAYUUANDOCO is an audiovisual training program that educates Wayuu children and youth from several nearby communities! They have managed to bring books and school supplies to this community but saw the need to create a library and educational space so that all boys and girls can have access to learning in their territory.

This community is located in a rural area in the middle of the desert, for this reason, they do not have access to the internet or electricity. Children have to walk long distances to be able to get school supplies or lend a book. When Pülasü visited Guaimpletü, our initial trip was to do a food drive for 50+ families in the community but after looking at the condition of the library (photos below) we made the decision to allocate some of the funds to reconstruct the library. We believe education is a key element for growth and the path to learning one's identity as an indigenous person. We also believe every child and teenager deserves the right to a fun, safe, and clean environment to learn.

Since 2008, malnutrition has claimed the lives of more than 6,000 children and 16,000+ are currently in a state of malnutrition.

The pandemic has made the situation worse in the past 2 years, many of these communities do not have access to sufficient food and water to practice basic hygiene, including handwashing, and access to health care is limited. This issue not only affects our indigenous communities, but also nearby Afro and farmer communities who reside in the department of La Guajira.

In addition to the pandemic worsening this issue of malnutrition, a nearby mining company has dangered their natural water resources and course of life around the Wayúu community. We are organizing food and water deliveries to 50 families in the community of Guaimpletü and this is where your donations come in hand!

With these funds, we'll be able to provide care packages that will include food items, water, hygiene products, and water filters. We will also need more donations in order to pay for the truck that will travel 2 hours to the reservation. Everyone deserves the right and access to clean, non-contaminated water, a steady supply of food, and a place to learn!
