On April 29, 2021, Cecy suffered an aortic dissection (tearing) and was immediately rushed into lifesaving surgery. Although this first surgery was successful in saving her life, a second surgery would be required to make some repairs. On top of that, the Dr's also needed to conduct a carotid bypass as a result of the first surgery. On Sept 14, Cecy had a successful carotid bypass. The next day, on the Sept 15, she had her open heart surgery for repairs. Following this surgery, Cecy suffered from two strokes. A cerebellum and spinal cord stroke, which caused some swelling in her brain and some other issues. Thank God the immediate threat from brain swelling eased within two days. Because of these complications from the second open heart, Cecy was intubated for 10 days along with a feeding tube. The feeding tube will remain, per the Dr, until her swallow function is strong enough to support food. Hoping a couple more weeks. After nearly two weeks in ICU, she’s now been moved to a general recovery room.

 

The road to recovery begins. This procedure is highly complex with the possibility of many things happening. What we know for sure is that the lifesaving procedures worked. Her heart, kidney, lung and all other vital functions are good but there will be lasting effects from the two strokes (motor coordination from the cerebellum stroke and leg movement from the spinal stroke). We won’t know what Cecy's speech will be like until her throat strengthens and heals. Cecy has already started gross motor skill movement exercises and has been in good spirits, smiling and joking from time to time.

 

Cecy’s life has changed forever and will also change for her family and friends around her. Only time and very hard work will determine how much of her function will return to a level of normalcy. With all that we are saying here, we ask for some help from you all and continued prayers. There are now so many new hospital and medical expenses to cover in addition to the therapy and mobility devises she may need.
