LIONS NEED VISION SCREENING MACHINE TO INCREASE FREE SCREENINGS

The North Port Lions Club goes to various schools, recreational, and private venues to provide the community children with free vision screening. We have an excellent chance of catching eye problems when the child is very young, yes even preschoolers. Amblyopia is the word doctors use, we call it a “lazy eye” when vision does not develop properly. Our test will help detect conditions that cause it.  Early detection is critical especially in younger children since they have no way of letting parents know that there is a problem and it is easier to treat.

Do these screenings really make a difference in family's lives ... you bet they do!  At one of the preschool screenings that the club does annually, a mother came up to us with a big smile and said, "Thank you so much for what you do.  You alerted me to a problem with my child's vision at your screening last year and I followed up with a professional exam. It was confirmed that my child had a serious vision disorder.  He has now been treated and is doing well.  Without your evaluation, I may not have known until it was too late for effective treatment."  Early vision screenings for children do make a difference.



We would like to raise money to purchase a new vision screening machine and accessories.  This will allow us to increase the number of vision screenings we perform by giving us the ability to not only serve children but most adults as well.  All screenings we provide are FREE for everyone and this year alone, we have served approximately 700 children through daycares and local community events.  The machine we need is the Welch Allyn SPOT™ Vision Screener. 
We currently are using a Plusoptix machine that will only screen children.  This equipment is not owned by our club and is being shared with approximately five other clubs in our surrounding area.  

100% of funds raised by our club goes back to our community. We all are volunteers doing free community service.
