I started this go fund me on behalf of Chelsea Dyer; she’s a fellow FA with us and part of the VX/AS family! I know she would never ask for help, as she’s a very private person but seeing what her and her boyfriend Xander are going though I thought we could all try and lift the burden of their continuing medical bills. And show them, she’s not only a co-worker she’s family.
My friend and client, Xander Burmer underwent emergency neurosurgery after waking up one morning and not being able to move his neck, arms or legs without searing nerve pain and muscle weakness. He had unusual complications from his surgery; a hematoma, a large bone fragment and large herniation occurred with in hours after his surgery but took the doctors days to figure out why he was still unable to move let alone sit up, stand or walk. More tests and imaging was done. A second neurosurgeon was called in and Xander was taken back in the OR for a second surgery. After the second surgery he was doing much better! Most of his nerve pain was gone. His left leg was weak and he was not able to bear much weight on it. The doctors decided he should be transferred to a physical rehabilitation unit. A day after his transfer, Xander suffered another complication that led to a cardiac episode, seizures and the return of pain. The Rehabilitation unit was not equipped to deal with an emergency and it took them 4 hours to stabilize him. The following day he was assigned a new doctor unaffiliated with the rehab unit, who has been instrumental in healing Xander. He is expected to make a full recovery but must learn to walk again and learn to perform basic tasks on his own.
Like many of us, Xander was financially impacted by Covid 19. His two surgeries are expected to cost 50k each and 15 days as an inpatient is up there too. I have started this GoFundMe to help Xander pay for medical expenses so he can focus on learning to walk again and healing. I know a lot of us are struggling right now but anything, no matter how small of a contribution will help!
