Help UCSB students build an electric car!

Donation protected
Hello! We, the Electromotive Force (EMF) at UCSB, are a team of engineering students with the shared goal of building an electric race car for the Formula SAE Electric competition. To do so, we need your financial support.

Our Story:
It’s clear that transportation is evolving. Vehicles of all types are shifting toward electric propulsion in an effort to reduce the copious CO2 production associated with today’s mobility industry. As engineering students with a passion for sustainability, we want to engage with this transition and educate ourselves in the field of electric vehicles.

With this in mind, three UCSB engineering students came together in October to found a group that prepares students for careers in sustainable transportation through hands-on project experience. Our first project is an electric race car for the Formula SAE Electric competition, described in more detail below. Through this project, students will gain applicable engineering, marketing, and management skills as well as a deep understanding of electric vehicle technology.

Our Project:
The Formula SAE competition challenges teams of university students to design, build, test, and ultimately race Formula-style race cars. Annual events take place in some 20 different countries, bringing together many of the brightest and most motivated undergraduate minds in engineering and management around the globe.

The competition is divided into internal combustion, hybrid, and electric classes; we will be competing in the all-electric class. At competitions, teams are assessed based on vehicle performance as well as student presentations on design, business, and finance.

To learn more about the competition, please visit their website.

Our Goal:
Naturally, an engineering project of this scale requires financial support: we’ll need to purchase car components, raw materials, and tools as well as cover a number of other expenses associated with running an organization. We expect to spend about $40,000 in total over the project duration.

We’ve set a smaller fundraising goal of $8,000 in the next month to help us gain footing with corporate entities who will be funding the majority of the project.

Our Club:
Electromotive Force at UCSB is a registered student group on campus and a pending chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers. We have received support in the form of advising and initial funding from the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments at UCSB as well as from Dr. Rod Alferness, dean of the College of Engineering.

The team currently consists of about 20 highly motivated undergraduate students and is growing quickly. Our members include second- and third-year students spanning mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, economics, math, physics, and more.

Note:
It is also possible to donate to EMF directly through UCSB’s Office of Development, although unfortunately only via mailed checks. Should you prefer this method of donation, please contact [email redacted] for further instructions.

Thank you for your support of our project!
