Fort Meigs Cemetery Potter’s Field Memorial
Donation protected
Hi...My name is Gary and I am raising funds for a memorial plaque for the known and unknown individuals, long forgotten, who are buried in Potter's Field in Fort Meigs Union Cemetery in Perrysburg, OH.
In Fort Meigs Union Cemetery lies a Potter’s Field, a place for burial of unknown, unclaimed, and indigent people. There are 92 known burials there along with an unknown number of individuals that were victims of the 1854 cholera epidemic in Perrysburg. None of the graves are marked and Potter’s Field is simply a large, empty grassy area in Block 2.
These individuals were born, lived, and died and each one would have a story to tell about their life and family. The installation of the proposed historical plaque would serve as a fitting memorial to them, bringing a sense that the citizens of Perrysburg and the surrounding area will remember them, even though they are buried in Potter’s Field.
Spanish-American War veteran Joseph M. Carey is one of the known burials. An application for a VA marker for him has been submitted to Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The marker will be placed in proximity to the historical plaque that is planned.
The historical plaque has been designed and a quotation received…all of which has been accomplished on a voluntary basis at no cost to this fundraiser.
Benjamin Franklin stated: “Show me your cemeteries and I will tell you what kind of people you have.”
All of the funds raised will be directed toward the purchase and installation of the memorial plaque and the installation of the VA headstone. Cemetery workers will provide the necessary installation labor. Any funds in excess of the targeted amount will be donated to the Fort Meigs Union Cemetery trustees for on-going cemetery maintenance.
Please support this mission by contributing whatever amount you are able to afford; it will be greatly appreciated! Thank You!
