大家好
My name is Branden, and I go by the artist alias "Busyrawk".
I am a South Korean mural artist, who paints photorealistic aerosol street art.
My goal is to leverage muralism’s high visibility to amplify the voices of marginalized communities.
I want to help revitalize Chinatown because my parents endured so much pain to provide me with the privileges I have today. I see parallels between their struggles and those of Chinatown’s immigrant forbears, who experienced exclusion and loneliness due to federal legislation and racism.
I also aim to set an example of what it means to be an Asian-Canadian in the context of settling on Indigenous lands.
This GoFundMe's goal is set at 30% of the required budget for the Dragon's mural.
Project Description:
The Four Guardians Project in Chinatown brings forth four murals, each portraying our ancestral mythical protectors in the form of photo-realistic aerosol street art. This initiative stands as a pivotal step in our ongoing endeavor to rejuvenate Chinatown.
Revitalization, a multifaceted endeavor, risks veering into gentrification without a nuanced understanding.
This project envisions Chinatown as a bastion of inclusivity, founded upon compassion and empathy, while maintaining clear boundaries that uphold the responsibilities of its denizens, neighbors, and visitors. It is imperative to honor the legacies of our immigrant ancestors' struggles with exclusion and the promises made in treaties as Chinatown evolves.
City development is essential for Chinatown's prosperity and progression. However, this progress must not entail cultural erasure or the marginalization of the vulnerable. I envision our city achieving its highest potential, guided by principles of compassion and empathy, yet acknowledging our current collective deficit in these virtues. This project aims to confront this reality by fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse communities.
The Four Guardians will convey this message through traditional Chinese seven-character poems, accompanied by QR code video links elucidating their significance. These poems will be crafted with elegance by our local calligraphy artist, Stephen Tsang, and I will oversee their enlargement onto the walls.
Each guardian will be positioned to overlook Chinatown from one of the four cardinal directions, symbolizing their unwavering vigilance over its tranquility.
