Help Students Realize Their Hopes and Potentials

Want to help us in our quest to make a difference? Help To Impact Lives (HTIL)  is raising money for its 4th annual Scholarship Fund to benefit students from the Barrett Town  community  in Rose Hall (St .James, Jamaica).  All donated funds go to stipends ($250 USD each student) and back to school supplies.

Last year, we were able to sponsor 14 students with stipends and provide them with back to school stationery. For the 2019-2020 school year, we plan to sponsor 4 new scholarship recipients - totaling 18 students. The scholarship program has had an immense impact thus far, especially for one first time recipient -Jaheim Gordon  - a replacement for one previous recipient who had lost his eligibility.

The day Jaheim got the award, he expressed, "Mr. Hemmings, I want to say thank you for the tokens that you have given to me, so that I may further my education and if possible I may do something similar to what you did to help my community.”

Through further communication with him and his parents, I learned that what we afforded him was a drop in the bucket. He had pressing back to school needs – school fee, uniform, shoes, textbooks: After renting 7 text books, he still needed to buy 17 more (each textbook costing over $4000); and he had only 1 set of school uniform and an old, torn pair of school shoes (from the year before). All these needs would easily exhaust the $33,000 (JMD) stipend he got.

Firstly, the other recipients learned that one of their fellow recipients had some pressing back to school needs; and they perpetrated an act of kindness by contributing back some of their stipend to help out Jaheim with some of his textbooks. Then HTIL afforded Jaheim more funds to cover all of his needs (textbooks, shoes, uniforms): he went from 1 pair of uniform to 5 pairs of uniforms, and 1 (old pair of) school shoes to 2 new pairs of school shoes.

The scholarship program's impact was definitely not isolated to Jaheim, and like Jaheim and his family, other scholars expressed their gratitude for what the scholarship afforded them.  Most notable though,  especially in Jaheim's case, it was the spirit of giving that was at the crux of making an impact.

We invite you to share in making an impact - you may not be able to make a difference to all, but you can make difference to one. Thanks in advance for your consideration and generosity.
