Fox Wood- Forest School Improvements

Fox Wood is a school for children aged 4-19 years with Severe Learning Difficulties, Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties and other disabilities including Autism (ASD), Hearing Impairment and Visual Impairments.

At Fox Wood we give our children every possible means to achieve their potential. We are looking to fundraise to add to and improve our Forest School area. Forest School is an outdoor nature- based educational program that provides our children with the opportunity to connect with the natural world. Our Forest School focuses on holistic child development, encompassing physical, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects. The aim is to foster a sense of curiosity, wonder and respect for the environment, whilst promoting personal growth and development in children.

Forest School offers several benefits to our pupils, including a rich sensory environment with varied texture, sounds and natural elements. This is beneficial to our pupils who have sensory needs. Being outdoors promotes natural social interactions, team building and play, where our children can practice social skills in a less structured and more relaxing setting, which can improve their ability to connect with peers. Natures calming effect reduces anxiety and stress. We have found that our children’s behaviours do reduce, and they engage fully when outdoors in natures classroom.

Due to some of our children’s medical needs, and of course the changeable weather, we are looking at purchasing a large Teepee tent for our pupils to use, enabling them to access Forest School all year round. Our goal is to ensure that all of our pupils are able to access, and benefit from the Forest School provision, as we believe this will support them in becoming the very best they can be, and of course, enjoying the freedom and potential of a natural learning environment.
