HELP US BRING FRANCIS HOME
Francis Bassa is a chef based out of Los Angeles who suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury on June 3rd. While visiting his family in Louisiana, he was watching his little brothers play in a baseball tournament and was hit with heatstroke and fell. The fall triggered a seizure, and eventual epidural hematoma and subdural hematoma.
Doctors had to remove part of Francis's skull to alleviate brain compression and he has undergone three brain surgeries since then. Francis fought bravely in the ICU for six weeks before finally becoming stable enough to enter neurological rehabilitation.
But he has already hit countless roadblocks in his recovery since then, including enduring another stroke and being denied basic health care. He recently lost mobility in his left hand and is still missing a piece of his skull. This is just the beginning of a very long and unpredictable road towards recovery. He is still in Louisiana and his family and friends are doing everything in their power to get him back to his home in Los Angeles where he can begin to recover and make steps back to his career as an artistic chef. Francis requires treatment programs in the areas of: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy. He is re-learning how to do basic things like walking, hand/eye coordination and regaining dexterity in his hands.
Like many chefs in the restaurant industry, Francis did not have proper health insurance and lived paycheck to paycheck. We are putting together this fund to help pay for his mounting medical bills. He is also facing limitations and being denied admittance to rehabilitation programs because of their fees.
Francis has always been exceedingly passionate about cooking and caring for others. He is inspired by memories from his childhood, and hopes his food evokes reminiscence in his patrons. Francis is not only an incredibly talented chef, but one of the most conscientious and hardworking people we know. He has an unparalleled capacity for empathy and compassion. His family, friends, and colleagues sincerely hope he will receive proper care. We all wish to see him rejoin the community he holds very dear.
ANY CONTRIBUTION WILL MAKE A LASTING IMPACT ON HIS LIFE
100% of funds raised will go directly to paying Francis’ existing medical bills from his six weeks in the ICU, three brain surgeries, ambulance rides, and other miscellaneous medical fees. Any funds raised that exceed these bills will go towards the following: paying for his final brain surgery to replace the piece of skull surgeons removed, finding him a neurological rehabilitation center in Los Angeles and assisting with transportation to get him back home to Los Angeles.
