Hi! We are Lexi and Emily Gee, the creative team behind Freak & Donna. As two non-binary TV industry people, and avid TV bingers, it is so important to us to create content that centers non-binary actors and characters. Episode 1 is out now, but we need your help in order to fund the remaining episodes!
While the TV and film industries have made huge strides in recent years to include more LGBTQ+ stories, it is still so rare to see a non-binary or gender-nonconforming character in a leading role, let alone two!
The most common LGBTQ+ tropes we see on TV involve a coming out story, queer self-discovery and/or trauma. While those stories are important, we believe it’s also important to see stories with LGBTQ+ characters who are just seen as regular people like anybody else. We want our community to know that we are more than just our gender or sexual identity. We can be witty, dumb, successful, flawed, and experience sadness, jealousy or joy in real life- so why not reflect that in our characters on TV?
In the Freak and Donna universe, they never need to explain their identity, leaving room for them to just live their lives. Freak and Donna are oddballs to their core, and have found comfort and commonality in each other’s company since they were children, bonding them as best friends for life. Our story follows them as they navigate their early 30s and try to figure out what it means to “grow up”. Until now they had no problem moving at their own pace, enjoying their stoner lifestyle, and defining in their own terms what adulthood means to them. Now that they are watching their peers get married and have babies they begin to compare their life choices and question them for the very first time. They also realize their future goals may differ from one another’s and they need to decide if they should grow up together, or just grow apart. Our story encapsulates small-town life, growing pains, queer love, but most importantly: queer friendship.
