Freddy Virola survives COVID
Two days after turning the Big 4-0, Freddy became ill with COVID-19. Short of breath he was taken to the hospital on March 27, 2020 diagnosed with COVID-19 and soon thereafter had to be placed on a ventilator. Despite harrowing efforts by the medical team, Freddy could not be properly oxygenated and required ECMO. Essentially ECMO is a heart/lung machine at the bedside where your blood goes through the machine to be oxygenated. He was transferred to Bellevue Hospital for this life-saving procedure. This was Freddy’s only chance for survival. During his hospital stay he was in a medically induced coma in critical condition and underwent numerous medical procedures and surgery. He spent 74 days in the hospital, 35 days on ECMO, 57 days on a ventilator, his lungs collapsed 4 times requiring 5 chest tubes, emergency thoracic surgery for acute bleeding in his lung, septic shock, and blood clots. His wife and son, Freddy Jr., never gave up hope and placed Freddy’s life in God’s hands and those in the hospital and prayed for a miracle. On June 9, 2020, that miracle was delivered and Freddy was discharged from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility. Freddy still has a long road ahead and we are asking for some help for him so that he and his family do not have to worry about finances. It will be a long while before Freddy will be well enough to return to work. “God is good all the time”. Any help during these trying times would be truly helpful and appreciated.
