Free Family Science Workshops

When I became a scientist and entered the workforce, I was saddened to see I was an anomaly both in physical appearance (Black woman) and in background (group home, teenage mother, Brooklyn raised, etc). There was no one who looked like me. Also conversations with others were strange. Someone would ask me what I did for a living...I would say "I'm a scientist" and they would respond "No what do you REALLY do?"
I spoke to children and adults about science and most were convinced it was too hard... too complicated... they weren't smart enough. Most people didn't even know anyone who knew anyone who was a scientist. Science was unrelatable, unfamiliar, unattainable. This was strange to me, someone who thinks about everything scientifically and who sees the absolute beauty of it!
I decided I wanted to change all of this. I wanted to make science more relatable and bridge the gap by teaching /introducing science in ways that were fun and innovative and I wanted to do it in the Brooklyn neighborhoods I grew up in to inspire those children by using my life as a model and path to show that you cannot allow your circumstances or past to define who or what you are!
SO, I started doing free science workshops in the community the last Saturday of every month. I have done them in public parks and public housing developments during warmer months. But now my workshops have a permanent home at the wonderful Seneca Village Montessori School in Crown Heights and more families are signing up to be a part. The workshop cost has always come out of pocket but as the amount of families participating has increased, so has the cost. I am determined to keep the workshops free as a service to the community, so I am asking for help to continue and serve even more families!
The cost of each workshop is approximately$200, which includes all the materials and a healthy snack for families at each workshop.
If you are as passionate as I am about providing amazing free science enrichment to children and families and are able to give, any help would be appreciated.
Thank You
