Portrait Valsero, the artist

Valsero, real name Gaston Abe Abe, is an engaged artist, pro-democracy and human rights advocate in Cameroon. He started rapping in 1990 with his first group, Ultimatum, and in 2008 his first solo album, “Politiquement Instable”, was released. This album had an unexpected effect, as the Cameroonian youth started looking at him as a leader: young, strong, brave and charismatic.

Valsero is an engaged rapper, who attacks and denounces the way Cameroon is run. For his songs, “Çe pays tue les jeunes” (“This country kills the youth”), “Ne me parlez plus de ce pays” (“Don’t talk about this country to me anymore”) or the well-known “Lettre au president” (“Letter to the President”) he earned both the attention (and anger) of the authorities and the love and respect of his audience. Although many of Valsero’s concerts have been forbidden, his first album encountered a big success, which continued in 2009 with the release of the song “Répond”. His success and his lyrics gained him the title ‘General’ within the Cameroonian youth. In 2010 his second album, “Autopsie d’un crime d’état” was released, followed by his third album , “L’appel du peuple”, in 2011.

His last album, “Intensité”, was released in 2015. In the same year, he took part in a live album of hip-hop and jazz with the collective of German-Cameroonian musicians called ‘Seven Hill’. In the past year he has released several songs that talk about the current crises Cameroon is facing: Fly Away and Resistance address the ongoing crisis in the Anglophone regions of the country, and Zombie refers to the current political context.

General Valsero is also a civil society actor who runs several campaigns of mobilisation and sensitisation of the youth. His association Jeune et Fort (Young and Strong) promotes education to citizenship, democracy and electoral culture; and his new Our Destiny Association works on reducing illegal migration and on engaging the youth in Cameroon in order to take control of their own existence for the benefit of the country .

In the past, in 2007 he launched the campaign “Va voter” (“Go vote”) that became in 2011 “Je vote donc j’ existe” (“I vote, I am”). In 2012 and 2013 he started a struggle against AIDS with the campaign “Je l’ai fait et toi…” (“I did it and you …”) in schools. He collaborated with artists such as Manu Dibango Fally Ipuba, Alpha Blondie, Tiken Jah, and French rappers La Fouine, Soprano, Kery James.

Valsero has also appeared in films. He played a role in “Le president”, by Jean Pierre Bekolo and is the main start of a documentary movie entitled “Du Piment sur les levres” (“Chili pepper on the lips”) by Laurène Lepeytre.

On January 26, 2019, Cameroonian rapper Valsero was arbitrarily arrested in Yaoundé. A few days later, Valsero and about 130 other detainees were accused by military justice of rebellion, hostility against the fatherland, incitement to insurrection, crime against the president of the republic and destruction of buildings and public property. These charges could lead to the death penalty.

What happened?

On January 26, 2019, Cameroonian rapper Valsero was arbitrarily arrested in Yaoundé, Cameroon, at the same time as a peaceful demonstration organized by the main opposition party took place.

The artist Valsero was arrested by the security forces without a warrant while he went about his business in the city center of Yaoundé with his 7-year-old daughter. A few days later, Valsero and the other detainees were accused by military justice of rebellion, hostility against the fatherland, incitement to insurrection, crime against the president of the republic and destruction of buildings and public property.

Valsero has been in prison for almost seven months now. His sound engineer, Mr. Alain Belibi, who came to pick up the 7-year-old daughter of Valsero from downtown Yaounde after Valsero's arrest, was also arbitrarily arrested and has subsequently been condemned to 12 months in prison, just for having gone to the police station to hand over Valsero's ID card with daughter.

What can you do?

2. Daily subsistence in prison for the two of them: 500€/ month to ensure the minimum (3 healthy meals per day, clean clothes, bed sheets, monthly prison fees where everything has a price, including the option to take a shower). Cameroonian prisons do not provide anything.
3. Rents of respective family households with loss of the two main breadwinners  : 500€  / month
4. Subsistence of dependants in their particular situations (housing, school etc):  1000€ / month
5. Awareness raising of their situation. Campaign #freevalsero. (The more we have, the more chances they have to be freed)
