On April 22, 2020, my little brother, Steven Waday Walker-Webb, was forcefully arrested in my family’s front yard while having a bipolar-schizophrenic episode. That day, my family had made several calls for help and support from the Mental Health Mental Retardation (MHMR). MHMR never dispatched the emergency mental health support team. Instead, the police were sent. With full knowledge of Waday's mental illness, the 6 officers proceeded to abuse him: striking him in the back of the head, tasering him, knocking him to the ground, and handcuffing him. The officers took my brother to jail instead of a mental health hospital, where he was placed in solitary confinement; not for committing a crime but simply for being mentally ill. Waday has been in solitary confinement without human contact for over 100 days. The conditions of his wrongful incarceration are exacerbating his mental illness, and his situation is made more dire by the COVID outbreak that is currently happening in the jail where he is being held; as he has multiple underlying health conditions. My brother is in a long line of other mentally incarcerated inmates waiting to be moved to a mental health facility while he waits to face the alleged charges.
My family and our community have dedicated our time towards bringing awareness to the injustice of how our country incarcerates the mentally ill, and are working to get Waday out of prison, and into a mental health care facility so that my brother can receive the proper care he needs. However, annual costs of inpatient housing for mental illness care can range upward of $150,000. We are asking you, our extended community for help. Any support towards Waday's release and recovery is deeply appreciated, whether that be a donation, sharing, or taking action by visiting: www. FreeWaday .com
Additionally, on August 22, 2020, I will be staging "Hundreds of Thousands", a 24-hour public demonstration, relegating myself to a 6x9 foot space on the grounds of the McLennan County (Highway 6) Jail in Waco, Texas, to mark the 122nd day that my brother, Steven Waday Walker-Webb, has spent in solitary confinement. The demonstration will be live-streamed on The Public Theatre’s Youtube channel and is a response to the wrongful incarceration of my mentally impaired brother.
You can view and share the link to the live stream of the 24-Hour Demonstration. The demonstration will begin August 22nd, 2020 4pm CST, 5pm EST, 2pm PST
