“My name is Deven Grey. I was recently released from the Alabama Department of Corrections. I served five years, five months and eleven days on a fifteen year sentence at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women. I was charged with manslaughter after struggling in an extremely violent relationship for six years. One night, The abuse was so dangerous and frightening that I took my boyfriend’s life. My family was completely devastated but still loved and supported me throughout my entire sentence. My eight year old daughter, who is on the spectrum, was the product of that tumultuous relationship. She was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. She requires very special attention and attends a private school. She is the absolute love of my life. She is the reason I was able to make it through all those years away from my family. Locked up in Alabama, it was a fight everyday to keep my sanity. Being in a completely different state away from everything familiar will take its own toll on you. As a result of my abusive and controlling relationship with my daughter’s father, I am left with no real work experience and a class B felony on my record. I have nothing but the support of my family. I need help to get back on my feet. I would love to get an apartment for my daughter and I. I also need a vehicle to get back and forth from work once I get a job and would like to see a therapist to help me with some of my mental health issues I obtained while being in my previous relationship and being incarcerated. I also plan on going back to school to further my education and work possibilities. If you would like to help me, you can listen to more of my story, “Blind Plea” is a podcast that features my life and the trials I’ve been through. Thank you for your time and consideration. God Bless.”
