Freedom Tattoo for Burma Aid
(March '24 update) We did it! A big thank you to everyone who generously donated and supported the Freedom Tattoo Campaign in achieving its £100k fundraising target across all our donation platforms. Donations are currently being directed to the beneficiaries, and the distribution of humanitarian aid has commenced. (see the video in the updates section below).
We are keeping the GoFundMe platform open for donations because, “Three years after the military coup, Myanmar’s ever deteriorating human rights crisis is now in freefall as the military lashes out indiscriminately amid losses, with insufficient world attention paid to the misery and pain of its people”. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
Burma (Myanmar) is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. 2 million internally displaced civilians require urgent lifesaving aid and 20 million are in acute need of humanitarian supplies. “This is inhumanity in its vilest form,” Volker Türk, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
On 1st February 2021, the Burmese (Myanmar) military staged a brutal coup against the vote of the people, shattering the pillars of the world's newest democracy. The ruthless suppression of peaceful civilian protests and defiance has plunged the country into conflict and an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. “Three specific military tactics have been systematically directed against the civilian population: airstrikes, mass killings, and burning of villages,” V Türk, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Tens of Thousands of civilians, including women and children, have been arbitrarily arrested, jailed, tortured, raped and killed.
In solidarity with the people of Burma, I will be getting a tattoo of a Burmese Water Dragon, a symbol of protection and wisdom, promoting peace and unity where only war was before, and I invite people around the world to:
Sponsor my tattoo | Get their own tattoo sponsored | Simply donate what they can.
Your donation will provide urgent lifesaving aid (including food, shelter, medicine), and essential ongoing support. Whilst humanitarian aid is not a replacement for justice and dignity, you will also be sending a powerful message of solidarity and hope to the people of Burma in their fight to restore democracy and fundamental freedoms.
Why donate today? On 11.9.23 the UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) reported compelling evidence of the military engaging in frequent and audacious war crimes and crimes against humanity; Including deliberate, indiscriminate attacks on civilians and refugee shelters through aerial missile strikes, mass executions, and the intentional devastation of whole communities – burning villages, schools, places of worship and hospitals.
Please sponsor me or simply donate what you can however small the amount, as together, we can make an immediate difference to the lives of so many. Funds will be directed to trusted organisations and groups working on the ground in Burma to ensure aid goes where it is most needed and will have the most impact.
