FreeP's Big Move

Donation protected
Boston University’s independent student newspaper, The Daily Free Press, along with many other independent college publications across the nation, is struggling to maintain its financial security. Earlier this year, The Independent Florida Alligator started a campaign to #SaveStudentNewsrooms and called on student papers to publish editorials emphasizing the need for independent student media. Here’s our contribution.

As we said in our editorial, threats to student journalism are threats to the future of journalism itself. Without independence, a paper may be severely limited to what it can and can’t publish, forced to adhere to a certain business or political agenda.

“Many accomplished journalists take their first steps at college newspapers,” we wrote in our #SaveStudentNewsrooms piece. “These newsrooms give aspiring journalists environments where they can learn to report, write and edit with greater flexibility and support from peers.”

The FreeP has served as a launching pad for countless young journalists. Our student reporters have gone on to work at local news outlets such as the Lowell Sun, the Eagle-Tribune, and the Boston Globe, as well as publications nationwide and even internationally. This experience cannot be taken for granted.

The FreeP also prides itself on its high concentration of female editors. By giving women the opportunity to hold leadership positions at relatively young ages, the FreeP gives them the confidence they need to rise through the ranks in newsrooms later in life.

This fall, we’re being moved out of our office of more than 10 years because we can’t afford rent. We’ll move into a new space in less than two months, leaving a lot of memories behind. We’re sad to leave, but we’re hoping that we can start fresh in our new building.

That’s why we’re asking for your help to raise $12,000 in order to cover our printing costs. Printing papers is one of our biggest expenses, but it’s also very important to our identity as a newspaper. It’s tangible, it’s something you can pore over, and it’s an experience to read. There’s something special about seeing your work for the first time in print, and we hope to keep offering that opportunity to future generations of BU journalists.

If we don’t come up with this amount by September 1st, we won’t be able to print papers this semester. Any contribution would help to keep print alive! We at the FreeP would appreciate anything you can do, whether it’s making a donation or sharing this link on social media.
