The Freimuth family was heading back from a family spring break trip to Wisconsin Dells on Thursday April 4, 2024 when they were stopped in traffic on 80/94 near Hammond. Around 1:30pm, a semi truck driver hit them at a very high rate of speed from behind, sandwiching their vehicle between another semi and killing Ty upon impact. Niki and Harrison (age 2) are currently hospitalized in Chicago and have a very long road to recovery- all while trying to mourn the loss of Ty. Harrison suffered a skull fracture but is recovering well at this time. He is truly a miracle in so many ways- the firefighter that saved him visited afterward and told family it took an hour and 4 saw blades to extricate him. Niki suffered severe facial trauma with multiple fractured facial bones along with a brain bleed and multiple rib, back, and bilateral arm fractures. She is currently intubated to preserve her damaged airway. She is scheduled for surgery this week for repair of her left hand and facial reconstruction surgery.
Niki’s focus needs to be on recovery- physically, mentally, and emotionally. The road will be long and Niki’s friends and family do not want her to feel pressure to worry about any finances or bills at this time. In the coming weeks when Niki is more stable, more decisions will be made regarding funeral arrangements for Ty. For now, those closest to her want to raise money for the family to cover the costs for when that time comes. So much is out of our hands but this IS one way we can help. Please donate to the Freimuth family and help hold them up and wrap them in love during this unimaginable time.
