Fresh 92.7's Level Up

Stop Fresh Crashing.

Our technology needs a serious update, and we need your help.

Fresh 92.7 is a community radio station in Adelaide, Australia, servicing our city’s youth and electronic music communities for almost 20 years. As you can imagine, running a radio station involves some pretty complex technological setups – from our studios, to the computers our extensive team of volunteers use to work from. We have up-and-coming announcers, producers, journalists, sound engineers, designers and more who all need a solid IT setup to do great work, develop skills and create content for the station.

We’ve been fortunate enough to have some very talented and generous volunteers over the last 20 years, who’ve put in the work and sourced the equipment we’ve needed to get by on the technology front. However, Fresh has only grown as a station and a business since then, and we’ve reached a point where we can no longer rely on the technological framework we’ve got. It’s outdated, it’s tired, and there’s not enough of it to go around.

If we don’t address this now, Fresh will crash. But, as a small business and a not-for-profit, we don’t have the means to do it ourselves. So, we need your help to LEVEL UP, and put a framework in place that will last for the next 20 years or more!

So what’s the money going towards?

Simply put, there’s a whole bunch of technology-related stuff that we need to update right now. This includes:

IT Restructure: We want to simplify and stabilise our servers, systems & hardware, and save money. Fun fact - Fresh 92.7 has the same number of servers as the Royal Adelaide Hospital. That's way too many for a community radio station. The whole situation needs an overhaul - it’s messy, and it’s sending our power bills through the roof.

Training People: We need money for more software licenses so that our young journalists, audio engineers and other volunteers can actually train and create in our studios. Right now, there isn’t enough to go around, and we’re asking our Wavelength reporters and our Production interns to edit audio on their own computers. That’s not really fair on those who can’t afford them. With more computers and greater access to Pro Tools and Adobe products, we can ensure that all of our volunteers have access to industry-standard setups, allowing them to create great content for the station and gain the skills they need to move into the workforce.

Production Course: We want to purchase hardware and software to bring our Production Course in-house. For the last few years, we’ve been teaching Adelaideans how to put together their own electronic music tracks, using the facilities of the School of Audio Engineering. We’re really thankful to SAE for allowing us to do that, however, it means that nobody who does the Fresh 92.7 Production Course actually interacts with Fresh 92.7 in any meaningful way, and it’s created this situation where those who’ve completed the course aren’t able to maintain contact with us.

Why do you need our money? Isn’t Sponsorship enough?

Fresh 92.7 is a community radio station, a not-for-profit organisation, and a registered charity. We’ve worked really hard throughout our 19-year history to generate revenue outside of donations, including through sponsorship (i.e. the ads you hear on the radio for other businesses) and our Fresh Mate subscriber program.

However, even though we have plenty of ads on-air and a respectable amount of Fresh Mates, running a radio station is expensive. Here’s a few of the yearly costs we have to cop:

·         $130,000 for the licensing needed just to actually play music,

·         $86,000 for our current IT support, internet and phone systems.

·         $65,000 to rent the building our studios are in,

·         $53,000 for power,

·         $53,000 on bookkeeping, auditing and insurance,

We could keep going, but you get the picture. After all of that, you can see why we haven't found ourselves with a spare $100,000 to attend to these outstanding issues.
