Dexter Davis is a local legend in the Cleveland arts scene. He always greets you with a smile and expresses his joy at reconnecting whenever he sees you. He is our friend and colleague having worked as a guard at the Cleveland Museum of Art for the past 28 years politely greeting and assisting visitors. Dexter is a talented artist with a beautiful soul and the kindest heart.
On July 3, 2020 Dexter was a passenger in the car of a co-worker who had offered to drive him home. An incident occurred involving another car where the other driver began to shout and act aggressively toward Dexter's colleague who drove away to avoid escalating the situation. The other driver sped up and maneuvered next to the vehicle where Dexter was a passenger. A gunshot was fired in Dexter's direction then the other car fled leaving Dexter with a bullet in his back. Another act of senseless gun violence.
Dexter was rushed to a nearby hospital where his injury was examined through scans and procedures to locate the projectile. The doctors have made the decision to leave the bullet in place due to the proximity to his spine. Removing it would be too risky so they will not attempt a surgery. Dexter should make a full recovery from the physical wound. He is home and recovering well having expressed knowing how fortunate he is to have no permanent or more severe damage to his body. He is grateful for his life. The mental and emotional trauma, however, will be with him for a very long time.
This beloved artist means a great deal to his museum friends and the Cleveland area along with the local arts community and beyond. To assist him with his long journey to a full recovery, we ask that you make a contribution to help with his medical expenses, the cost of therapeutic treatments, supplies, transportation, and other basic needs. Dexter will need materials to help him process this experience through his art. He would be grateful for any financial support you can offer. We hope to see him return to work as his jovial self with his infectious smile.
Thank you on behalf of Dexter Davis for any help you can provide. We appreciate your consideration and willingness to offer aid as we show our friend that we care!
Sincerely,
Dante Rodriguez and Thomasine Clark
