Cooper's Surgery/Recovery
Donation protected
Our beloved German Shepherd/lab mix, Cooper, has cancer. We found out on 11/18 that he had a mass on his lung after taking him to the vet for loss of appetite and coughing which had developed a couple of days earlier. On 11/19 the mass was confirmed as a tumor and it appears the cancer may have originated in his spleen. Surgery is needed to remove the tumors, confirm the type of cancer, and give Cooper the best chance of life. We are asking for help to pay for the surgery.
Cooper came into our lives quite unexpectedly - he was an unwanted backyard puppy who had been adopted by a woman who quickly decided she couldn't for him. We were his third home in his short life and we knew he was ours the moment he fell asleep in Amanda's arms. He was a challenging puppy but even through those challenges, he enriched our lives in huge ways.
Anyone who has met Cooper knows what a special dog he is. He is extremely intelligent, sensitive, and physically beautiful. Virtually every time we take him for a walk or a ride, he elicits smiles and compliments from strangers. If he wasn't a slightly nervous and shy dog, he would have made a wonderful therapy dog. He is my heart dog and I know I'll never have another like him.
Without treatment, our vet has given Cooper 2-6 weeks to live. Surgery will be risky but will extend his life and give us more time with our boy. How much time surgery will buy us depends on how the procedure goes and what kind of cancer he is suffering from. We are currently in the process of deciding whether to have the surgery performed locally or whether to take him to the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Our local vet has estimated that the cost of surgery to remove the tumor in the lung and to remove the spleen and have it biopsied will be about $2700. We have already spent $700 on exams, x-rays, and blood work. Unfortunately this is simply money we do not have. I am currently self-employed and primarily drive for Uber to support myself. Amanda recently lost her job and is looking for a new one now. This illness comes at a very difficult time for us, and any help you can give us will be deeply appreciated.
Thank you.
