From Horror in Gaza to Peril in Egypt - Support Mai's Family

Dear friends,

We are very honored to invite you to accompany our beloved friend, Mai, and her sisters and mother who are living in extreme precariousness in Egypt, after having escaped with only their lives from the horror in Gaza.

Mai is a 22-year-old painter and artist who had received awards for her work in Gaza. She was in her final year of university, studying business, and was looking at a promising business and artistic career ahead of her when the war on Gaza stole her last year of university and destroyed all of her art.

Mai is living in dire circumstances in Egypt, along with her 26-year-old sister, Razan, and 10-year-old sister, Jwan, and their mother. Jwan was a bright child, full of life, but has been struggling with listlessness and depression, and has been unable to go to school. Her home, toys, school, and childhood friendships have all been destroyed. She has lost access in many ways to the simple necessities of being a child—connection, stability, and play. Razan, the eldest, has a degree in business administration, but despite this, is unable to find work in Egypt.

Mai’s family has no source of income. Life in Cairo is very dangerous and unstable for Palestinians escaping the war— and it is dangerous for women, especially for a family that consists entirely of women. Mai and her family are trapped between the horror zone that is Gaza, and the perilousness of Cairo. Finding the money for shelter, clothing, food, education, and healthcare is difficult, if not impossible most of the time.

As artists ourselves— as women, and simply as fellow humans whose hearts have been crushed by the extreme inhumanity being unleashed on the people of Gaza—we beg you to consider sharing what you have with Mai and her family.

What they most need right now is money.
